Leroy Fief, on trial for the murder of Shane Arredondo, told the Moffat County Court on Wednesday that he would not testify on his own behalf. Fief’s announcement came as a surprise, since even his lawyer, Jeremy Snow, said he had not anticipated Fief's change of heart. Fief had been expected to testify since the beginning of the trial. Snow said his client made the decision based on Judge Michael O’Hara’s final choice on jury instruction.

The Colorado Board of Education responded to the Steamboat Springs School District's application to withdraw from the Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services by asking the district to provide more information on its special education program plans and to bring in a third-party financial consultant.

Steamboat Springs’ City Manager Deb Hinsvark and Police Chief Joel Rae have held two community meetings the past two weeks to explain to the community why they think that 3 acres of Rita Valentine Park is the ideal location for the new $8.9 million Steamboat Springs Police Department headquarters.
On Sept. 5, I went to the police department community meeting, along with several other Steamboat residents. We were from all over the town. Not one person in the crowd agreed with the police department about building a new police station on Rita Valentine Park.
There is reason to step back into the sadness and hurt of 12 years ago, to bring back the gut feeling so many of us shared that September morning. As bad as what was taking place in New York City became, we looked up at an American flag and saw something good. That good is the reason we must remember.
You only get one chance to make a good first impression, and for travelers entering Steamboat Springs on U.S. Highway 40 from the east, their welcome to town is less than memorable. But thanks to an investment by the city of Steamboat Springs, those drab highway median strips from JD Hays Way to Pine Grove Road are getting a face-lift.

When Babette Dickson moved to Steamboat Springs in 1997, it was a much different place for families with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.
Although Nevaeh Smith receives therapy through the Yampa Valley Autism Program, she has not been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.
The Yampa Valley Autism Program casts a wide net when supporting families with children who have developmental disorders. It serves more than just children with autism spectrum disorders, and when it added the Community Cultivation program in 2010, it expanded its support to young adults who are entering a transition point in life.
One sign of the dysfunction in Washington, D.C., these days is that the conversations there have completely detached from the ones happening in kitchens and living rooms across Colorado and the country.
