Janna Schaefer: Event was exceptional

For the past nine years, the Blue Star Mothers of Colorado have hosted a special weekend for the parents in the state who have lost their son or daughter in the military since the War on Terror began. To date, we have more than 215 Fallen Heroes in Colorado. Seventy-five of the families of the fallen came to Steamboat Springs the last weekend of September for a weekend of healing, support and honoring.

I would like to express my gratitude to the following individuals who made this weekend so exceptional.

All of the families who attended the weekend stayed at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort and had nothing but good words to say about their stay and the staff there. Special thanks to Vince Ross, Kelly Brown, Don Miles, Jeff Love, Alex Babcock, Nick Burns, Agne Erickson, Don Gleason, Trish O’Connell, Kenny Schmitz, Jess Wain, Marey Whelihan, Traci Coy, Jerr Terranova, Lisa Subry and Galo Endara.

On Sunday, the families were taken on the gondola to the mountaintop for our final service. A special thank you to Lindsey Yochem, from Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. What a beautiful and uplifting ending to our weekend that was!

Thank you to Scott Myller for making the families feel welcome to the city on our opening night.

Nikki Inglis, of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, was very helpful in showing us around the area when we were searching for a location.

Thank you to Pat Carney, of the Old Town Hot Springs, for discounted tickets for the families of the fallen.

I would also like to extend a special thank you to Matt Stensland and John Russell from the Steamboat Today newspaper. Your coverage of the weekend was done in such a respectful and professional manner. We are all grateful for your consideration of the emotions of the weekend and the touching article that you wrote.

The Blue Star Mothers and the Gold Star Parents of Colorado thank all who helped in any way in preparation for and during the Gold Star Weekend. Your kindness and generosity was overwhelming.

Sincerely,

Janna Schaefer
