Steamboat volleyball plays well in loss to Battle Mountain

— The Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team again couldn’t take a set from one of the state’s best, Battle Mountain, but coach Wendy Hall said Thursday night that she saw everything she was hoping to see from her team.

The Huskies continued what’s been an undefeated and rarely challenged run through the league with a three-set victory, 25-20, 27-25, 25-22.

“We lost, but we played really, really well,” Hall said about the game, the regular-season finale for the Sailors. “We fought hard. We fought like crazy. We had a few too many errors, but I really feel like our game is the best it’s been all year right now.”

Steamboat trailed 20-19 late in the first set before Battle Mountain pulled away. The Sailors led 24-20 in the second set but couldn’t get the final point they needed. Then Steamboat battled back from a 7-1 hole to keep the third set competitive to the finish.

If that’s indeed some of the team’s best volleyball, it couldn’t have come at a better time. The top 36 teams in Colorado’s Class 4A will be chosen by Monday and slotted into three-team regionals to begin postseason play. Despite the loss, the Sailors are likely in that group, so the season should continue.

“Between how we looked tonight and how we looked Friday in our senior night match against Rifle, we’re playing better now at the right time,” Hall said. “The team is playing with more confidence than they were earlier in the year. They’re competing more than they were earlier in the year. Trust in each other has brought our level of play up. And you know what, these kids really enjoy each other, so they’re not tired of each other and ready to part ways. I’ve seen that, and it can be your demise, but not with this team.”
