The Hayden High School girls volleyball team went point for point with Vail Christian on Saturday on a road trip that wrapped up the season. Or, it nearly went point for point.

Vail Christian managed to pull out the win in each of three tight sets, sinking the Tigers, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.

“They were literally neck-and-neck the entire game until the last few points,” Hayden coach Christene Planansky said. “It was a back-and-forth battle. We just had a few little mistakes here and there, few missed serves, and that’s all it took.”

Hayden finished the regular season 10-7 and in fourth place in the Western Slope League, a huge step from its 4-18 mark a year ago. Planansky said her squad tentatively earned a home game for Tuesday’s first round of the district tournament. The team’s probable opponent is Vail Mountain.

“I’m really proud of them,” she said. “Coming from seeded eighth last year to fourth this year, that’s a big leap and great progress. Going into the playoffs, it’s going to be really exciting, and we’ll give everyone a run for their money.”
