Fleischer moved to Steamboat Springs after an illustrious competitive Alpine skiing career that included two trips to the Olympics and nearly a decade on the U.S. Ski Team.

Fleischer grew up in Nebraska but quickly got the hang of skiing when his family moved to Vail when he was 10. Soon, he was skiing with the best in the world and placing as high as second in a World Cup event, which he achieved at the 1999 World Cup downhill finals.

He twice was the U.S. downhill champion, winning in 1996 and 1998.

Injuries eventually caught up to the fearless skier, known for an all-in approach, and he retired after a 2002 knee injury.

“When you retire, you hope you’ve done something for the sport or within the sport that’s meaningful, and that’s what this means to me,” Fleischer said in May, when his inclusion in the Hall of Fame was announced. “It signifies that to my peers out there in the ski world what I did in the sport, what I continue to do in the sport, is enough to be inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame, and I take a lot of pride in that. Skiing has always been my love, my life and my passion.”

Fleischer spent nearly another decade working as a TV ski race commentator. He now runs Fleischer Sport, a ski and snowboard rental shop steps away from the base of the gondola at Steamboat Ski Area.

“I’m very proud of my career and very proud of the fact I could inspire as many people and kids as I did,” Fleischer said in May. “The Hall of Fame, this is the icing on the cake, showing how important ski racing is in my life, how ski racing was an enabler for me to have a voice and be recognized in the world of skiing.”
