— There’s no grand strategy the Steamboat Springs high school-level mountain bike team plans to take into its final performance Sunday at the state championship in Eagle.

Its members plan to show up. They plan to ride hard, and they hope that adds up to another strong finish in what has been an exciting inaugural season for the program.

Steamboat last competed Oct. 6 in Elbert where it placed third in its division. That performance set the stage for Sunday’s championships, especially for Jett Seymour, who jumped to the top of the Division 2 freshman boys standings by winning his race.

Now donning that division leader's jersey, he’ll attempt to hang on to it Sunday in Eagle.

“I wasn’t really expecting that,” Seymour said. “I was expecting to be in the middle of the pack. I’m happy to be in the leader’s jersey now, but it’s a lot more pressure.

“It would mean a lot to win. It’d mean I was the best in the state of Colorado for the freshmen.”

Steamboat got plenty of other top finishes at Elbert that it hopes to build on this weekend. Koby Vargas was third, Simon Zink was seventh and Peter Rosenthal was eighth in the sophomore boys division. Tanner Visnick was sixth in the JV boys class, Andreas Foulk was 23rd and Dylan Wallace was 65th.

Lesley Myller, meanwhile, was eighth in the girls JV race.

She’s hoping for another top-10 showing this weekend.

“I haven’t been getting to train as much as I’d like to,” she said. “I will definitely be trying to get into the top 10 again. I just need to go hard. That’s it.”
