Green Halloween costume recycling event Saturday
Steamboat Springs — With Halloween quickly approaching, a group of local high school students has the answer for what to do with old, worn-only-once costumes.
The Steamboat Springs High School chapter of National Honor Society is hosting its third annual Green Halloween event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Bud Werner Memorial Library. The event provides children as old as 12 with a chance to donate, exchange and return costumes for free.
Green Halloween is a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to get into the festive spirit and celebrate Halloween, according to organizers.
Students have placed boxes decorated with Green Halloween flyers at entrances of businesses around town to provide a place for community members to deposit their costumes through the end of the day Friday.
Aidan Gibbs, president of the National Honor Society, said Green Halloween is exactly what you might hope for in a community recycling project.
“Money is saved, potential waste is reduced, and it is awesome to see the excited look on kids’ faces as they browse the costume selection,” Gibbs said.
The project aims to keep costumes out of the landfill and parents from spending unnecessary money.
After Halloween, families are encouraged to recycle their kids’ costumes at the same box locations they may have visited before the holiday. Boxes are located at Steamboat Springs High School, Steamboat Springs Middle School, Emerald Mountain School, Soda Creek Elementary School, Strawberry Park Elementary School, City Market, Kid’s Kabin, Young Tracks Preschool and Discovery Learning Center.
