Sporting good sales see greatest boost in Steamboat's August sales tax report

— Sales tax revenue in Steamboat Springs continued to grow in August with some of the gains likely attributable to the USA Pro Challenge rolling through town.

The city collected 7.4 percent more in sales tax revenue in August compared with the same month last year, which represents an increase of $107,619.

All of the sales categories measured by the city saw gains except for utilities.

Sporting goods saw the greatest jump with a 19 percent boost.

Lodging saw a 10 percent increase in revenue.

Finance Director Kim Weber said there was a general sense it was busier in town in August.

“I would say some of the increases could be from the USA Pro Challenge, especially in the sporting goods area, but probably not all of it,” Weber said.

It's difficult for the city to pinpoint the exact economic impact of a certain event on sales tax collections, but the bike race was by far the biggest event held in the city in August.

But it wasn't downtown Steamboat Springs or the U.S. Highway 40 corridor that saw the greatest boosts in sales tax revenue.

West Steamboat led the regional growth with a 23 percent improvement in its collections, representing an increase of $42,172.

Other highlights from the city's August sales tax report include a 12.4 percent increase in accommodations tax revenue compared with last year, and an 8.5 percent increase in the air service sales tax.

Building use tax, which fluctuates based on the level of building activity, dropped by 76 percent in August but remains up 20 percent year to date.

Year to date, the city's total sales tax revenue is up 6.4 percent compared with last year.
