Steamboat golf squad wraps up season with gritty day at state

— The Steamboat Springs High School golf team again was left struggling around a monstrously difficult course Tuesday, and the squad’s season came to an end with the final round at the state championship in Evergreen at the Hiwan Golf Club.

Britt Walton bounced back to easily best his Monday score, carding a 79 in his round. Erik Sobeck had an 82, and Brandon Martin shot an 86.

“You really can’t judge these kids by their scores on a golf course like that,” Steamboat coach Steve Dodson said. “That was unlike anything they’ve ever seen. They grew up and matured a whole bunch these past couple of days just from playing this type of course.”

Walton and Sobeck ended up tied for 18th place overall while Brandon Martin was tied in 50th place.

Wind kicked up, frustrating players during the day, but the main obstacle remained fast greens that confounded players from across the state.

“The biggest thing it affects is your chipping,” said Sobeck after his final round as a high school player. “If you miss a green on the wrong side, it can lead to a double bogey. It really affects your confidence with the chipping, and it can lead to some really high numbers.”

Sobeck said he got off track early, scoring three doubles in a row, but rallied later and finished strong.

“I hung in there and managed to put up an all right number,” he said.

It wasn’t enough to place high, but on Tuesday, it was something to appreciate.

“This really tested their patience and grit,” Dodson said. “You can’t take a break for five hours on this course. You have to stay focused, and if you lose it, it’s going to cost you. They don’t realize it yet, but this made them better golfers and that will show in the years to come.”
