Alex Berger: Keep fluoridation out

On Tuesday, the residents of Portland, Ore., soundly defeated an attempt to add fluoridation chemicals to the drinking water by a vote of 61 percent to 39 percent just six months after Wichita, Kan., residents did the same. The two cities join a list of more than 125 communities that have rejected fluoridation by either a council decision or ballot vote since 2010.

In opposing fluoridation, Portland voters agreed with the position of most Western nations that there are safer, more effective, and less intrusive ways to promote oral health than adding a chemical linked to thyroid disease, IQ loss and other ailments to the water supply.

Most Western countries, including the vast majority of Europe, do not fluoridate their water. In fact, shortly before Portland’s vote, Israel announced that it will be ending its mandatory fluoridation program and Ireland has proposed legislation making it a criminal offense to add fluoride to public water supplies. In Canada, the number of people drinking fluoridated water has dropped by about 25 percent since 2008.

Fluoride chemicals are the only chemicals added to public water for the purpose of medication (to purportedly prevent tooth decay). Citizens want their water departments to provide safe potable water, not dental treatments. Let’s keep fluoride supplementation between patients and their practitioners.

Research shows no significant difference in the number of cavities for U.S. communities with and without fluoride in the drinking water. As another example, the vast majority of Western European countries do not fluoridate; yet the dental health of Western Europe is no worse than in the U.S. communities that fluoridate.

It’s time we join Portland, Wichita and the rest of the world in our opposition to fluoridation. Fluoride consumption should be a choice, not a mandate.

Fluoridating water appears neither necessary nor effective. The Oral Health Division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledges that fluoride’s benefit comes from topical contact. Brushing your teeth with a toothpaste containing fluoride is the most common topical application. Swallowing fluoride provides no known benefits.

Fluoridating water is not safe. It is accepted that fluoridation causes severe problems for some individuals. Kidney patients are told to avoid fluoride, and the CDC recommends that bottled water with less fluoride be used when mixing infant formula.

Fluoridation provides an uncontrolled fluoride dose. Fluoridation began before research showed that fluoride’s benefits were due to topical application, not ingestion. And finally, fluoridation began before all its side effects were known.

Crazy. Been drinking the stuff for at least 50 years and brushing my teeth with it. Still here, thank you. BTW: The John Birch Society fought this years ago. Nothing new.

"IQ loss"? My God that explains it!! Who else wasn't smarter last year? I've felt it coming on for years. It's part of the Federal Reserve's "Dummy Down" conspiracy. Or so I'm told. I dunno.

Nope not really anything new. Yet, the application of Fluoride to our water is the only medicinal application of a drug, element for the general population's health. In general when a Doctor administers a drug they consider the dosage. With the addition of Fluoride to the water system, one has zero idea as to what the level of Fluoride intake for an individual is.

U.S. EPA today proposed to start gradually banning a pesticide often used on cocoa beans and dried fruits that degrades to fluoride, a move closely linked to the Obama administration's decision last week to curb the maximum levels of fluoride in drinking water out of concern for children's health. (http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2011/01/11/11greenwire-epa-proposes-phaseout-of-fluoride-based-pestic-97414.html)

Fluoride was used to effectively treat Hyperthyroidism in the 40's. So if it slows down the activity of a overactive thyroid, would it not slow the function of a healthy thyroid? Hypothyroidism, an under active thyroid, has been shown to cause weight gain. No problem with that either.

Unfortunately, having read the draft summary on Fluoride, that topical application is the only benefit of Fluoride. Those studies that were initially cited for the addition of Fluoride to our water, found that it hardened teeth. Yet, while it does provide some effect in hardening bones (teeth), materials dynamics have shown that as a substance gets harder, it becomes more brittle (seems like there are more broken bones today than in years past). Those initial studies found that many people with OVER-Exposure to fluoride, had teeth so hard that when they had a problem they could not be repaired.

The National Resource Councils investigation of studies also found that the only benefit of Fluoride was the topical application as stated in the original letter to the editor. That as Fluoride is an anti-microbial, and so its topical application kills the bacteria in our mouths eating away at our teeth. The factor that most contributed to the reduction in cavities was economic.

Funny how Fluoride is the number one compound in most anti-depressants. or that it was the compound used by the Nazi's. It also causes Hypo-Thyroid issues that one in three women now have (most don't know it) and one in five men. There is NO reason for Fluoride to be in anything, even all toothpaste has a "poison" warring on the label because of the Fluoride, that should be a clue. I also have always found it odd that in the 60s it became an issue to make sure all children get fluoride everyday. About the same time that the young people of this nation was using their voice. I make my own toothpaste, an NO Fluoride.

Not all children get fluroide, Michelle.

Some are introduced to people like Kermit Gosnell instead.

Seriously??? Of all the things in this world to dwell on you found FLOURIDE to be more suspicious than the complete subversion of your entire government???

I envy you Michelle. Although I have had brief experiences with mind-altering drugs, I have never experienced that level of detachment...

You know, the same people who insist that "The government adds fluoride to the water for evil purposes", typically also try and tell you that : Pharmaceutical companies invent new diseases for profit Bigfoot exists The CIA distributed crack to the inner cities The U.S. government knew about 9/11 beforehand and let it happen The moon landing was fake Airplane exhaust is really the government spreading sinister chemicals Paul McCartney died in 1966 and was replaced by a doppelganger etc....etc....etc....I love u guys!

actually, it is commonly known that fluoride being added to the water supply is one small, but significant step toward gun confiscation...WAKE UP PEOPLE. OBAMA WANTS OUR GUNS!!!!!!! DANG IT TO HELL, HE AINT GETTIN MINE.

Love that as soon as one puts forth reasonable arguments in a discussion, those presenting those facts are wackos... associating those who claim that what is thought to be beneficial are from left field.

The fact that ALCOA produces most of the fluoride that makes it into the water supplies, for our benefit, saves them a bundle every year. This because their TOXIC WASTE can be sold for a profit as opposed to being treated as toxic waste.

Bob, Maybe you ought to read a little more about issues before labeling those who seek to make changes from the status quo as wacko's... Maybe there is a little truth in the facts presented in seeking to lift the veil (apokolypsis from its original greek meaning - not the end of the world) that those facts presented as truths by our government are not. Those facts are simply pushing someone else's agenda - in this case being paid to dispose of toxic waste - at its most basic level.

Nope nothing new, nobel prize winning physicist, Max Plank, stated that progress happens one tombstone at a time. This as those who hold onto their "truths" steadfast need to move out of the way for real progress to be made. Yet our government is here to protect us from ourselves, yet at the same time poisoning us - through co-opted science.

New York – June 27, 2005 -- Newly available research, out of Harvard University, links fluoride in tap water, at levels most Americans drink, to osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer(1).

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a highly-regarded Washington DC-based organization, urges that fluoride in tap water be declared a known or probable cancer cause (2), based on this and previous animal and human studies.

Elise Bassin, PhD writes, in her April 2001 Harvard doctoral thesis, “…for males less than twenty years old, fluoride level in drinking water [about 1 part per million] during growth is associated with an increased risk of osteosarcoma.”

Further, EWG charges that Bassin’s lead advisor, Chester W. Douglass, DMD, PhD signed off on her research; but told federal health officials there is no cancer link to fluoride, according to the Boston Herald (2a).

Douglass is also editor-in-chief of the Colgate Oral Care Report, a newsletter that goes to dentists and is supported by toothpaste manufacturer Colgate Palmolive.
