2013 Steamboat Springs Running Series schedule

— Ski training never sleeps.

And as 17-year-old Evan Weinman has come to find out, that’s a good thing. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club cross-country skier has spent the better part of his summers doing what Steamboat teens do.

He biked a lot. He hiked. He got on the river, and he trained when he could.

But last winter, something happened. After winning multiple races, including teaming up with two other skiers in Alaska to take home a Junior National title, Weinman realized he loved skiing.

“I guess I realized skiing was more of a passion than biking,” he said. “That’s what I’m going to train for this summer.”

In the scheme of things, Weinman and his fellow Winter Sports Club teammates took a week off after the last race in March. From there, it was on to cross-training.

A big part of that is running. Just like last weekend’s Hayden Cog Run, the opening event of the Steamboat Springs Running Series, Saturday’s Spirit Challenge had the look of a winter podium, with the 5-kilometer race podium made up of Winter Sports Club skiers.

Weinman was the top finisher in the 5-kilometer race, clocking in at 18 minutes, 49 seconds. He beat teammate Simon Zink to the line. Zink was second in 18:51, and Winter Sports Club veteran Charlie Von Thaden was third in 19:29.

On the girls side, Harvard University’s Emily Hannah was first in 20:11, Cara Piske was second in 22:40 and Abbey Habermehl was third in 23:11.

For Hannah, one of the top young cross-country skiers in the nation, the run showed she finally was healthy.

During her freshman year, Hannah battled Achilles tendonitis during the ski season and couldn’t classic ski race.

“I was disappointed,” she said. “But it helps you appreciate when you’re healthy. Right now, I’m just happy to get out of the city. I appreciate this after having been in the city for nine months.”

In the men’s 10-kilometer race, Harry Niedl was first in 38:21, Josh Smullin was second in 38:43 and Brad Reidhead was third in 39:23. On the women’s side, Pearson Smith was first in 43:14, Kris Anderson was second in 47:35 and Melissa Flack was third in 53:18.

The 2013 Spirit Challenge served as a fundraising event for the Yampa Valley Autism Program.

The next race in the Running Series is the June 2 Steamboat Marathon.
