Gary Hofmeister: 'Just the facts, ma'am'

For those of us with a few decades behind us, we remember well one of the first TV lines to “go viral” (in today’s idiom) from Sgt. Friday on the hit show “Dragnet.” Whenever one of the witnesses or persons with knowledge of a crime he was interviewing would drift off into irrelevancies, he would pull them up short with, “Just the facts, ma’am. That’s all we want are the facts.”

Well, thank God — and Fox News — we got a bunch of facts this week and some of us are having trouble wiping the vindicated smiles off our faces. Finally, after being dragged kicking and screaming from being force fed some indisputable facts, the mainstream media discovered three overwhelming newsworthy stories they had tried to either ignore or simply carry the water for a fable they should have known was false. Concerning Dr. Kermit Gosnell, late-term abortionist and serial killer extraordinaire, the rationales for refusing to cover his Chamber of Horrors in Philadelphia because it might sully their vigorous approval of abortion on demand were so weak that once they hit the light of media day, they were never mentioned again — just too embarrassing. One example would justify a belly laugh if it weren’t so sad: “It was too gruesome to cover.” The last time the major media avoided a story because it was too gruesome, I was likely still in short pants. Just for the record, Harry Truman still was in office then.

The next blockbuster was the admission by IRS officials that they have been targeting conservatives for audits. Well, duh. But it is gratifying to see them acknowledge what a lot of us have known for eons.

Some stories, however, get bigger with time, not smaller because the attempted cover-up by the powers that be ticks off even their normal lapdogs. No one, not even the complicit media likes to be lied to because they understand that ultimately that egg on the faces of the perpetrators will splash on them, as well. So not only don’t they earn the kudos they so covet for breaking a big story, but they are viewed by their peers as either irrelevant or a little bit stupid.

And this is a Big Story. The emails and other evidence absolutely prove that the administration knew from the get-go that the Benghazi attack that killed our ambassador and three others was an al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist group. But since this happened so close to the upcoming election, some officials in high positions decided to fabricate a story blaming the entire episode on an anti-Islamic video, which supposedly caused this spontaneous attack. Then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s fingerprints are all over this, probably because she had gotten used to reading and believing her own sycophantic press coverage.

And why not? She survived the crooked dealings in the White Water scandal. She overcame the utter incredulity regarding making $100,000 in cattle futures on a one-time bet. And if those pesky Republicans or vast right wing conspiracy dunces tried to take her on again, she would just sashay in front of any hearing and bully them under the table. And by gosh, that’s exactly what she did with her infamous “What difference does it make?” comment that shut up her inquisitors.

It almost worked. But with the Freedom of Information Act and the tenacity of the reporters at Fox News, such as Stephen Hayes, of The Weekly Standard, I saw the ghost of Sgt. Friday demanding those facts. And by the way, Friday always got his man — or woman. Let’s hope.

Lets talk the facts a complete Alien concept at the Fox network .... The doctor in Philedelphia actions were intolerable and dispicable..but the actions of one greedy crazed human...and if the entire history of his practice is correct was going on long before the current occupant of the whitehouse.

As reported on Fox yesterday... it seems that there were some 300 given "special attention" by the IRS.. 70 were conservative groups seeking to avoid paying taxes as "non-profits".. several others were Jewish Israel support groups and Left leaning groups such as the "99 percent" group..... The IRS run by a Bush appointte knew about these issues and did nothing and lied to congress last year when asked....I don't hear the word "setup" on Fox... What the IRS did is very very wrong but I guess their "special aduits" of black churches under Bush were OK..where was the Christian Right wing asking questions then???

The Bengahzi attacks was a sad & tragic event ..losing an Ambassador and 3 brave Americans was a great loss but FOX lost the high ground and turned the entire event from day one into a crusade to stop HIllary and get Obama.... and thank you for proving that thru your rant on her..... Fox's concern over the 4 deaths is almost a joke... 6 americans were killed in Afghanistan this week.... not a word or concern about them though...

I would hope that when the former Vice President comes for your little private affair you ask him why he lied to his president and led his circle to lie to the nation and the world that resulted in the death 4100 brave Americans....
Oh and by the why has Rumsfield not been on Fox this week promoting his book but on all the other networks...could it be that Fox did not want to hear about his statements that he tried to warn Cheney and Bush there probably was not any WMD's and that we were not prepared to go to war.... and in the end...guess what he was right on both fronts.....

SO please do not call FOX a news station or the bastion of the fact.... it is an outlet for those on the right with agendas that cherry picks "facts" to suit that agenda.

Three were murdered last night in Chicago. Five survived being shot. Watch CBS on 48 hours and see what great community organizing Obama did in Chicago. Rahm Emanuel is doing a great job of running Chicago. Illinois last two governors currently in prison . Illinois is virtually bankrupt. The perfect state to take a community organizer from and make him president.

Just when you thought there could be somewhat an intellectual discourse on the subject of Fox ... Fox provides another example of what is so wrong with them Fox has now decided that MR ROGERS is the root of all that is wrong with our nation....

Fox hosts are reporting on a study (actually a single professor just talking) on how Mister Roger’s message of “You’re special just the way you are” has created generations of lazy, self-interested little socialists and he’s also the reason American children don’t do well in school. He never said you should get things just for asking. He said you should have a feeling of self-worth no matter what.

Fox going after Mister Rogers is another piece of evidence that shows the American Far Right has lost its collective mind in the last several years. Things like compassion and empathy have already been vilified on the Right, but to overtly say that a man like Fred Rogers is evil leaves one speechless....

The Right has been hijacked by Randian “ethics” in that a person’s worth is tied to his or her bank account and how much he or she resembles the “superman” who cares not for morals but only self-interest. Modern American conservatism has been led down the path of the Tea Party, of might-makes-right, of thinking businesses are people, people do not to be educated above their "class"... that america should be of one color and one religion....

Fox is a very "special" network..with very "special people" with advertizers with very "special" agenda's.........

and so the great American experiment of democracy continues........

john Did you watch 48 hours tonight or is Fox all you watch? It appears to me that CBS has the same high opinion of Rahm Emanuel that I have. CBS has been reporting on Chicago's war zone for a year or so and I guess Rahm has not appreciated the national attention his city has received.

Fox is the problem.

No doubt about it. John is right.

It's all the fault of Fox News.

It has nothing to do with the federal gubbamint flailing at its citizens like a bull in a china shoppe.

The fact that Uncle Scam is wire-tapping the press, flying drones over your house, inflating your currency, running intimidation campaigns against its opposition, and covering up not one but 2 gun-running operations both south of the border and in Libya, has NOTHING to do with it.

NOPE.

It's all about how Fox News is just plain crazy, along with all its viewers.

Mister Rodgers is a National Hero while the taxpayers who got the financial equivilent of water-boarded by the IRS are just a bunch of a-holes anyway.

And if they are all "crazy" anyway, then, well, then, hell, they must "deserve" to get such treatment.

After all, the "American expiriment in democracy" can "continue" without the input of an entire segment of the population that John thinks is "special"; his nice little nasty way of calling them "stupid" and therefore justifying their abuse, and eviction from what he hails as the "expiriment in democracy".

How, exactly does one have a "democracy" if everyone who disagrees with John and Barack Obama is too scared to vote??

well so much for civil discourse.... my point is Fox is not an independent reporter of the news... and unfortunately we have been driven to the point of who can scream the loudest to get the most attention.... and the result is no ones listens anymore except to the side your already on......

I was unaware that people were afraid to vote in the last election.... I believe it was a record turnout....

1

mark hartless 11 months ago

No. It was NOT a record turnout.

And the last election occurred BEFORE the Chicago intimidation/protection machine was outed.

I'm not too sold on Fox News either, but how exactly would John St Pierre be in a position to know which network IS and IS NOT reporting the news?

Besides, if even 1/10th of the news (from Fox or otherwise) about Uncle Scam is true then we are SCREWED anyway.

As far as being polorized, the electorate certainly is that. And I believe it is worse than it has ever been in my lifetime.

The reason is because, unlike years or decades ago, whoever controls gubbamint controls such a huge and rapidly increasing part of our lives.

Think about it... Put something in control of your health-care, your job, your church, your car and the fuel it burns, the food you eat, what size soda you can buy, what you can do with your land, and basically every other aspect of your life and guess what!!... Everybody is going to feel COMPELLED to fight aggressively to obtain control of THAT particular entity.

And that is exactly what we see happening. The left wants the control to continue the "fundamental transformation", and the right wants control to keep that transformation from destroying the few remaining slivers of personal liberty we have left.

And it's not just individuals. Corporations, who are now basically RAN by the stinkin' gubbamint, feel COMPELLED to jockey for position. Kind of funny that the harder the left works at getting gubbamint to "control" corporations, the harder corporations work to infiltrate and cozy-up to gubbamint. And few on the left have the brains or vision to even see the connection. The very thing they foolishly believe they are fighting is what their actions are causing.

The answer that is starring everyone of us right in the face is quite simple:

SHRINK THE FREAKIN GUBBAMINT to the point that it is not such a huge part of every single aspect of every one of our daily, hourly lives, and people will feel less of a need to control it. The smaller the entity, the less important it is who controls it. The smaller the bull, the less damage it can do to my china shoppe, No?? Less room for corruption, waste, fraud, abuse, etc as well.

Collectively, I do not think we will summon the will to do it. We will foolishly continue to feed and empower the beast with one hand while filing away at its few remaining fetters with the other. It will not be long now until it turns on its "master" the American people, and shows them who is REALLY in charge. But, like trading on Wall St, by the time it becomes obvious to the majority, it will be way too late.

I predicted that the tone had been set for these wannabees when they flew air force one over the statue of liberty, it is hard to change one's stripes. This whole circus is a product of hair dressers acting as intermediaries for those seeking to extract theirs from the taxpayers in order to attain justice.. When will the senate start hearings on the video producer? The big problem overall is politicians placing their reelection above all else and this administration have been the poster persons for this fiasco..

Mr. St. Pierre, You stated that "but the actions of one greedy crazed human.." Were that only the case. Unfortunately it is not. All you need to do is go to Yahoo search and search "abortion practice like Gosnells's" You most likely think it is the action of one crazed human (and yes Gosnell is a greedy crazed human at best) because the media for the most part has refused to cover this story. How much has been covered in the Steamboat Pilot? Why does the media cover gun related tragedy with much more vigor then abortion tragedy? I don't know the answer but I have an opinion. Guns and gun owners are looked down on by the main stream media to a much greater degree then late term abortion. Late term abortion is apparently OK with the media. Is it possible that Gosnell performed more illegal late term abortions then the combined victims of Aurora, Sandy Hook and Boston Marathon? Where is the media outcry. I think they are hoping if they ignore it, it will just go away.

Fast and Furious Benghazi IRS AP reporters Is Obama channeling his inner Nixon Now why don't we have a modern day equivalant of Woodward and Bernstein

PS: The Associated Press reported that with 97 percent of precincts reporting nationwide, a total of approximately 118 million Americans cast a vote on Election Day. That number is significantly lower than the 131 million voters who cast a ballot in 2008. Turnout was down across the entire nation, with every single state reporting lower turnout than they saw in 2008, according to Curtis Gans, director of American University's Center for the Study of the American Electorate.

Come on Scott.

It's been 14-1/2 hrs...

Don't you have some way of excusing Fast& Furious, Benghazi, the IRS targeting of conservative voters, the secret investigation of the AP, etc...?????

Surely the World Champion Excuse-Maker has an explination for all this...

Oh, By-the-way...I never did hear your plausible explination for all the construction activity that was going on at Auschwitz...

You know, the targeting started when the Obama administration took over GM and Chrysler... The branches they forced closed were ran by mostly conservative people...

Is there anyone left in this country who doesn't understand that we are now a full-fledged Banana Republic, complete with all the corruption, kickbacks, manipulation, etc...???

I would NEVER embrace any "News" that filed a lawsuit against the FCC FOR THE RIGHT TO LIE.. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090811183807AAe4Eh8 Please who believe anything from our selected media needs to remember how to read. Fox News is also backed by major money from Prince Alweed, from Saudi. He HATES Americans. He is the third richest man in the world. He has stated many times that to defeat America, you must divide them. I would say Fox News does that very well. He also came out on 9/11 with a statement that "America had it coming." Go ahead and support Fox News...make you a large part of the problem.

Don't like the forecast???

Just kill the weatherman!

Michelle thinks that all the world's corrupt men are on the Fox News payroll and that no corrupt men could possibly inhabit the halls of congress, or Dept of Justice, or IRS, etc, etc.

I wonder... if someone from Exxon Moblie had visited Dick Cheney or GW Bush in the White House 147 times in 4 years (like the Irs head did with Obama) would Michelle accept the excuse that it was for "The Easter Egg Roll"...

Sorry Michelle, but you sound more than a little naieve to me.
