Steamboat briefs: Cole Miller is named Student of the Month

Cole Miller

Cole Miller was named the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs student of the month for April.

Miller, a senior at Hayden High School, was honored for his academic achievements, including his 3.82 GPA and his Advanced Placement, honors and dual enrollment course load. Through the dual enrollment program, Miller has received college credit and welding certifications for his work at the Babson-Carpenter Career and Technical Education Center.

After graduating May 19, Miller plans to attend Colorado State University and study mechanical engineering.

He is “an outstanding young man with tremendous work ethic and who has an attention to detail. He will be a great asset to the engineering profession,” Hayden vocational and technical education teacher Kevin Kleckler said in a news release.

Retirement celebration for Jane Toothaker is May 31

The Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services is celebrating the retirement of Executive Director Jane Toothaker from 5 to 8 p.m. May 31 at the Catamount Ranch & Club Lakehouse, 30215 Waters Edge Trail.

Auditions for ‘Pinocchio’ production are May 21

Auditions for Emerald City Opera’s Touring Opera Troupe production of “Pinocchio” are from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church of Steamboat Springs. A pianist will be provided, and singers should bring sheet music for one memorized vocal selection. Volunteers for the the fully staged and costumed amateur production will rehearse during the summer and perform in schools throughout Northwest Colorado in the fall. Volunteers are needed for marathon activities

The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association is in need of volunteers for the following Steamboat Marathon activities:

■ Participant bag stuffing from 5 to 8:30 p.m. May 30 at the Chamber. Pizza will be provided.

■ Registration and packet pickup from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 31 and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 1 at Olympian Hall at Howelsen Hill Lodge.

■ Finish line, announcer assistant, bag tent from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 2 on the Routt County Courthouse lawn.

Visiting Nurse Association is offering fitness classes

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association would like to remind readers that May is Arthritis Awareness Month and that movement is one of the best treatment options for arthritis. Low-impact exercise can reduce pain, improve quality of life and delay disability, according to the VNA, which offers a variety of fitness classes for older adults, including Movement & Exercise, Tai Chi for Health and Arthritis Foundation Aquatics. A $3 donation is the cost for most of the classes, which are offered in Steamboat Springs, Oak Creek, Yampa, Hayden and Craig. Routt County Girl Scout fundraiser is May 30

Cocktails & Cookie Creations, a fundraiser for Routt County Girl Scouts, is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 30 at the Catamount Club & Ranch Clubhouse. The 21-and-older event features savory appetizers and specialty cocktails made with Girl Scout cookies and live entertainment by Todd Musselman.
