Steamboat Springs riders open cycling season

— The competitive mountain bike season has started for some of Steamboat’s most avid cyclists.

At the 12 Hours of Mesa Verde on Saturday, Steamboat registered several top results.

Bec Bale was the top female, finishing six laps in the women’s solo to come in fifth place. Mike Sharkey was 11th in the men’s solo, completing seven laps. Rob Peterson was 20th in the men’s singlespeed, completing five laps, and Jeff Boswell and Josh Enck were 23rd in the men’s duo, completing seven laps. JP Pougiales was part of a third-place duo geezer division, and Clint Ball was part of a team that finished 17th in the men’s duo.

The race ran from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and featured 16.4-mile laps.

At the Eagle Outside Festival in Eagle, Steamboat riders again dotted the field.

In the Firebird 40 mountain bike race Saturday, Alex Pond was the top finisher, coming in 17th in the men’s open. Matt Schiff was 24th, Jackson Morgan was 48th and Jeremy MacGray was 55th in the men’s open. Kelly Boniface was 11th in the women’s open, and Katie Lindquist was 15th.

In the Bigblock 35 race, Nate Bird was ninth in the men’s open singlespeed division.

Patti Lindquist was 10th in the women’s open Smallblock 22.

Finally, in the Firebird la Femme 24-mile race, Hannah Williams was seventh in the women’s open division.
