— Summer-like weather could make a guest appearance in Steamboat Springs just in time for Mother’s Day.

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction is forecasting a high temperature of 72 degrees under mostly sunny skies Sunday followed by even higher temperatures to begin the workweek Monday.

The National Weather Service foresees high pressure building in the region late this week, which should pull in drier air from the northwest.

The Elk River near Steamboat was flowing at 1,481 cubic feet per second Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, within 200 cfs of the median flow for the date. It is expected to climb to 2,000 cfs by Mother’s Day, putting it in the typical range for mid-May.

The National Resources Conservation Service reports the snow depth at the Elk River measuring site at 8,700 feet, north of Clark, has retreated to 18 inches. Six hundred feet higher in elevation, the Mount Zirkel site holds 45 inches of snow. Closer to Steamboat, at 10,700 feet, the Tower site on Buffalo Pass still measures 99 inches of snow.
