Dr. David Criste: Stats don’t lie

Statistics released separately Tuesday by the Justice Department and by the PEW Research Center show a very steep decline in the number of firearm homicides from 1993 to 2011. The data show that the huge number of gun laws already in existence are working.

FBI stats through 2010 show the same continuing decrease in firearm homicides. In fact, the FBI figures show that more homicides are committed with baseball bats than with assault rifles.

The FBI statistics were available to anyone for viewing at the time our Democrat-controlled Legislature was grandstanding about new gun laws. They apparently were not interested in what the actual data showed, instead choosing to burden law-abiding citizens with more gun laws and a “punishment tax” for going through a background check.
