Steamboat got a day of good pitching but still split a doubleheader Saturday with Eagle Valley. Playing at “home” in Craig, the Sailors rode a big game from Ryan Jeep to a 4-2 victory in the first game, the team's first win of the season. Matt Regan also was good from the mound in the second game, but the squad fell, 3-0.

“We need to continue to work to tighten up that defense, and I know we can hit better,” coach Dave Roy said.

Jeep wasn’t quite a one-man wrecking ball in the first game. He certainly was in the right places at the right times, however. He was strong pitching, going seven innings while giving up two runs and striking out 11 batters.

He didn’t let many balls in play, and his defense scooped up most of those that did make it, notching an error-free game.

Jeep also scored two runs. He and Regan scored off a sharply hit single from Billy Clark in the second. Jeep then walked and scored in the third. Clark also got on and scored on a double-steal attempt. The play eventually ended the inning, but not before Clark crossed the plate to pad the lead.

“We work on that play just so we can defend it,” Roy said. “This time it turned out to be an offensive weapon.”

Steamboat couldn’t find much of any offense in the second game, when it was shut down by Eagle Valley’s top pitcher. The Sailors got five hits and gave up three errors behind Regan’s nine strikeouts.

“It’s a shame we couldn't get any runs for him,” Roy said. “He pitched a great game.”

The Sailors return to action Saturday at Battle Mountain.
