VNA provides information for brain injury awareness

As part of Brain Injury Awareness Month in March, the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is providing the following information about concussions. A concussion is a brain injury that affects cognitive, emotional, behavioral, physical and sleep/energy patterns. Early intervention and comprehensive management of the concussion can aid in subsequent cognitive and physical recovery.

Action steps for parents:

■ Make sure your child has the proper safety equipment for the sports he or she is playing, including a properly fitted helmet.

■ Make sure your child receives qualified instruction for the sports he or she is playing.

■ Follow safety guidelines for car seats and buckle up.

■ Talk to your teen about the dangers of cellphone use while driving.

If you think your child has a concussion:

■ Seek medical attention right away.

■ Keep your child out of play. Concussions take time to heal.

■ Tell your child’s school nurse and teacher about any recent concussion.

■ Tell your child’s coach about any recent concussion. Coaches should know if your child had a recent concussion in any sport.
