Steamboat Springs boys lacrosse beats Telluride
Steamboat Springs — Consider it a weekend chock-full of success.
The Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team responded from its first Mountain League loss earlier in the week by dominating play in Grand Junction the past two days.
Steamboat beat Telluride, 16-0, on Saturday, a day after pounding Durango, 17-3.
“We had 11 kids (Saturday) with goals or assists,” Steamboat coach Bob Hiester said. “That’s back to where we need to be playing. That’s good lacrosse.”
Hiester called the first quarter Saturday the team’s best opening frame of the season. The Sailors jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led 13-0 at half.
Ben Wharton led Steamboat with three goals. Christian Ramirez, Thomas Tarcha, Peter White and Jesse Draper all chipped in with two goals.
“Things we had emphasized we did,” Hiester said. “Offensively, we took care of the ball and moved the ball. We played really good position defense.”
Steamboat (4-1 overall, 3-1 in the Mountain League) next plays at 4 p.m. Thursday at home against Bountiful, Utah.
Hiester said he doesn’t know much about the Utah team, but its head coach played for Hiester in the 1980s.
The team also plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rock Canyon in what should be a big test.
“I was real pleased with the way we played,” he said. “We were better than both teams, but we didn’t stoop down. We maintained our level of play.”
