Steamboat briefs: National Weather Service offers flood, fire safety tips

As part of Colorado’s Flood Safety and Wildfire Awareness week, which ends today, the National Weather Service would like to offer readers the following flood and fire safety tips:

■ When a flash flood warning is issued for your area, you need to quickly move to higher ground out of drainages or other low spots.

■ Nearly half of all flash flood fatalities occur in vehicles. Do not drive through a flooded roadway. One to two feet of water will carry away most vehicles. More flood safety information can be found at www.floodsafety.noaa.gov.

■ Areas burned by wildfires are highly susceptible to flash floods, especially within the first two or three years after the fire.

■ Homeowners are encouraged to create a defensible space around their homes and other structures. Tips can be found at www.csfs.colostate.edu/pages/defensible-space.html.

■ People are encouraged to reduce wildfire risks in their communities May 4 as part of the Colorado Wildfire Preparedness Day of Service. Find ideas about how to help at www.firewise.org/dayofservice.
