Steamboat Springs The weather forecast has impacted what was to be a busy weekend for prep sports in Steamboat Springs.
Steamboat Springs High School Athletic Director Luke DeWolfe confirmed Friday that the threat of a major snowstorm that is expected to begin Friday afternoon in Northwest Colorado has led to drastic scheduling changes on the opening weekend of the spring sports season. The changes mean that most of the games scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Steamboat will be rescheduled for later in the season. The exception is the girls lacrosse game scheduled for Friday afternoon against Aspen, a game that will proceed at 3 p.m.
Friday’s tennis match against Boulder has been canceled, as has Saturday’s match against Air Academy. The boys lacrosse game against Fruita Monument on Saturday in Steamboat also has been canceled. Steamboat Springs High School won’t send its girls soccer C team to Denver East for a game Saturday.
“Based on the forecasts and the travel advisories for the area, we felt like the right decision was to cancel these games,” DeWolfe said.
DeWolfe said Boulder and Air Academy contacted him early Friday to advise him that they didn’t plan to travel this weekend. He said the high school felt that based on the other schools’ decisions as well as the weather forecast, traveling to Denver was not in the best interest of students or their families.
“We want to err on the side of caution,” DeWolfe said.
