— The Steamboat Springs Rugby Club opened its season Saturday in Grand Junction with a 28-14 win.

Steamboat took an early lead and never trailed, but the game wasn’t sealed until Steamboat captain Jason Troyer scored a try in the last five minutes.

“It was tight the first 20" minutes, coach Julian Bristow said. “We had all of the possession and territory, but Grand Junction’s defense was resilient and wouldn’t let us through.”

After a scoreless start, Steamboat’s Taylor Anderson scored the first try wide, giving Steamboat the lead.

Joe Lauber added a second try for Steamboat, but the difference was the right foot of Tim Callahan.

Grand Junction took several penalties, and Callahan converted 13 points via kicks for the difference.

“Tim kicked two long-distance penalties,” Bristow said. “We kept our nose in front and were able to maintain possession of the ball. We played at their end and forced them into mistakes.”

Dallas Bailes won Man of the Match for dominating lineouts and his defensive prowess.

Steamboat next plays at 1 p.m. Saturday at Glenwood Springs.
