— A preliminary hearing has been postponed for former Steamboat Springs Christian school teacher John Brothers, who is accused of sexually assaulting a boy.

The hearing was scheduled for Friday, but Routt County District Attorney Brett Barkey asked that it be delayed. Barkey said he has asked the Colorado Supreme Court to clarify a ruling it recently made regarding whether the child victim would have to testify at the preliminary hearing.

Public Defender Sheryl Uhlmann objected to the preliminary hearing being postponed. It took about a year for the Colorado Supreme Court to deliver its initial opinion, and Uhlmann said she had no faith in the court's intent of making sure the case progressed quickly.

Routt County Judge James Garrecht granted the request to postpone the preliminary hearing. Garrecht said the ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court was confusing and subject to different interpretations.

There have been 17 felony charges filed against Brothers.

A hearing will be held Monday to decide how to proceed with the case.
