Oak Creek coffee shop becomes Kate's Cafe, expands offerings

— The Mugshot Coffee Shop in Oak Creek isn’t just a coffee shop anymore. And Kay Brockmeyer, who bought the shop last fall, decided to make a change to illustrate that fact: Meet Kate’s Cafe.

Kate’s Cafe has expanded beyond the shop’s previous staples with more baked goods and pizza.

Yampa’s Brockmeyer has a decade of baking experience, and it shows in the variety of fresh breads she offers. The cafe also has pastries for morning coffee and pies for later in the day.

Breakfast offerings include farm fresh eggs from a couple of Oak Creek residents.

“I’m trying to use local producers as much as possible,” Brockmeyer said.

That includes some of the toppings on the cafe’s selection of pizzas, such as sausage from Montgomery’s General Merchandise in Yampa.

“There was a pizza place down the street,” Brockmeyer said. “And when they closed people started telling me to do pizza.”

Now, South Routt residents can satisfy virtually any pizza craving at the cafe. It offers marinara, garlic parmesan and red pepper sauces and myriad topping options. One customer, Brockmeyer said, has a thing for shrimp on his pizza.

“People come in and ask for something, and I go get it,” she said.

Brockmeyer said she’s working to expand the menu of soups, sandwiches, salads and, yes, more pizza.

“It’s way more than just a coffee shop now,” she said.

She started at The Mugshot during the summer, and when previous owner Jane Sindell was considering closing the shop because she was offered a new opportunity, Brockmeyer said she’d buy the business.

“I’d never run a business before. I had no idea. There’s lots to learn, lots of little ins and outs you never think of until it comes,” she said. “But it’s been a lot of fun. I’m really enjoying it.”

Kate’s Cafe, located at 216 E. Main St., opens at 6 a.m. for the morning crowd and stays open until 8 p.m. during the week and 7 p.m. on weekends. For more information, call 970-736-8491.
