Fourteen years slipped by rather quickly. I already can’t quite imagine not coming to work at Howelsen Hill. Of course, the thing I will miss most is interacting with everyone, from the athletes (very young through adult), parents, coaches, volunteers, administrators and board members. Additionally, the city staff, my friends at Steamboat Ski Area, folks from the local supportive business community and out-of-town donors. There are so many people, the list is amazing.
Luckily, I live in Steamboat Springs, where so many great folks reside. I do want to say thank you publicly to all of those who supported me and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s coaches and administrators during this period. You know who you are. The club’s success would not have happened without each and every one of your contributions (time, money and labor).
This was one of those jobs that you live 24 hours each day. So much to be learned from 1,000 athletes and their families. Talk about a parent training immersion course. The Winter Sports Club is a microcosm of the community at large. I am most impressed by the kids that I met during my time here. Their spirit is refreshing, always seeking new adventures, willing to challenge themselves, able to stand again and again against adversity. I often have referred to the Winter Sports Club and Steamboat Springs as Kid Town USA, a place where a kid can be a kid. My advice to them is to always do your best and do the right thing in everything you do. Goals and dreams do come true here.
Although I would love to list every supporter by name, I must say thanks to my closest partner, Sarah Floyd, who will help guide the club forward from here. She has brought the proper perspective to kids’ sports locally and to the club — every kid counts! Also, a special thanks to John Adams for having the vision and the guts to allow us to take the club in a new direction in 1999. John, it was worth it. And finally, thanks to my wife, Heather, and children Nic and Mandi for being my support network. My family and I look forward to our next adventure.
Thanks to everyone, especially the young at heart.
