Tom Wither: Stop raining on the parade

In anticipation of the upcoming 4th of July parade, I have a big concern over the excessive and unwanted use of these super soakers that people on floats dispense out to the parade crowd.

I have attended my share of parades in Steamboat over the years and have never seen such disregard for little kids as well as older folks in the audience as I witnessed last 4th of July parade. I spoke with many people who were either standing or seated near me, and all either left the parade very upset or complained about the excessive use of water hitting them and soaking their clothes, etc.

Whoever is in charge of this time-honored tradition, please put in the parade contract that no water soakers of any kind will be allowed. I have been attending the once-great 4th of July parade on and off for more than 66 years. I hope last year won't be the last one. Thank you for your consideration.

If this is indicative of the problems & concerns that motivate you to write a letter to the editor, you must lead a charmed life. My hat's off to you.

Maybe council should pass an ordinance requiring every head of household to arm themselves with a super soaker in order to retaliate against those soak everyone at the parade.

I understand what Tom is saying..I lived with super soakers for over a decade on daily river trips.. We also had rules for using them because they can cause injury to the face and eyes.. Most kids pump them up to mass pressure and then shoot a strong powerful stream of water at you..If this was to hit an unexpected person or there infant in the face during a public parade, the city could be looking at a possible law suit..Super soakers are great fun on a hot days but I have seen kids get hurt and cry hard from being pelted in the face with them.. I would suggest sprayers that spread the water out more. This would let more people to get slighly wet not hurting anyone with a powerful stream of water..Small buckets of water would be a better and safer way as well..Getting wet at a parade is common and should be expected..I suggest either stepping back from the front line or dont go if getting a bit wet is not for you...

Maybe 1 or 2 blocks could be designated as the blocks to disburse water on. For example: Water may only be disbursed between 7th and 8th or 7th and 9th street, etc... Those who dont want to get wet will know to watch the parade from a different block.. JMO...

Yes. Let's regulate the use of squirt guns. Because the great unwashed can't be relied upon to deploy them responsibly. Ye gods.

Tom Wither was just expressing his thoughts on a part of the 4th of July Parade that many people have complained about though out the years. I think it is so unfortunate that someone like Tom cannot make a statement, no matter how trivial it may be to some, without the sarcastic remarks. Tom Wither has as much love for our community as the next person who is so privileged to live in Steamboat Springs and the surrounding areas. He has given countless hours of his time to make Steamboat a better community. He was a great influence on many students who crossed paths with him when he was the art teacher at Steamboat Springs High School for decades. I have known Tom since the late 70’s and he is a good, caring and decent man who was just saying what was on his mind. Those type of insensitive remarks may prevent people who want to express his or her opinions in the future no matter how great or small their topics may be.

Maybe you should go out and buy a squirt-gun and some bottled water and end it all, Rhys...

Or, better yet, go soak a few losers who desperately deserve it...
