An Oak Creek man pleaded guilty last week to a felony car theft related to the death of a 32-year-old woman found dead in a Steamboat Springs hotel room March 15.
Sam Wisecup Jr. faced charges of felony first-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, misdemeanor unlawful use of a financial transaction device (a debit card) and misdemeanor concealing death.
As part of a plea deal, Wisecup Jr. pleaded guilty to felony second-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft. He received a one-year deferred judgement and sentence. If he follows the conditions set forth in the deal, the charge will be dismissed after one year. He will be on supervised probation for one year and has to pay $1,063.50 in fees. Wisecup Jr. was not sentenced to any jail time, but he is currently serving an eight-month jail sentence related to a DUI case from 2011. He is due to be released from Routt County Jail on Feb. 4, 2014.
Police originally arrested Wisecup Jr. and Yampa resident Kendra Parker on suspicion of stealing a car belonging to Gillian “Jill” Gentile, 32, of Yampa.
After a maid found Gentile's body slumped over a trash can at the Quality Inn & Suites, police considered Gentile’s death suspicious and treated it as a possible homicide. Police later uncovered a love triangle between Gentile, Wisecup Jr. and Parker.
Although police initially thought foul play might have been involved, they now think Wisecup Jr. spent the night with Gentile and then panicked after finding her dead. He then used her debit card, and police think Wisecup went to pick up Parker before the two fled town later in the day. Police arrested Wisecup and Parker at a hotel in Amarillo, Texas, the day after Gentile’s body was found.
Toxicology results later showed that Gentile had a potentially lethal combination of painkillers and alcohol in her system.
Parker pleaded guilty to concealing death and was sentenced to 36 hours of community service, one year of supervised probation and had to pay a $300 fine.
