Steamboat Springs Kelly Stanford’s last day as executive director of Routt County United Way will be July 31.
The Stanford family is moving to Lawrence, Kan., and she has accepted a position as the resource development manager for Communities in Schools of Kansas in its state office.
Scott Stanford is leaving the Steamboat Pilot & Today to become the general manager of the Media Division for The World Co.
“The opportunity to be the executive director of Routt County United Way has really been a privilege for me,” Kelly Stanford said. “Living here in Steamboat, this was sort of my dream job in the community."
Working in human services was something she’d really wanted to do, Stanford said, and she's been honored to be involved in human services needs and to work with the people involved in the nonprofits focused on those needs.
“I’ve learned a lot from them,” she said.
“I’ve had the privilege of having board members that have been tremendously committed,” Stanford said. “United Way doesn’t get to do anything if we don’t have committed board members. We’ve had some of the best people in this community serve on the board."
Executive committee President Jason Lacy said the Stanford family moving will be a loss for the community.
“Kelly has really been the glue that has kept our organization going for the last several years. She’s been with us through the times just before the recession when everything was great and the tough times when nobody wanted to pick up the phone” because they knew it was a fundraising call, he said. “We’re going to sorely miss them.”
Routt County United Way has started advertising for Stanford’s replacement.
"What we’d like to see, obviously, is someone who’s here in the community already, who has good ties in Steamboat and out in the county as well because we’re a countywide organization,” Lacy said. “As many nonprofits in Steamboat, we ask our executive director to be a lot of things. We really need someone who’s very well-rounded and has a broad skill set.”
“I am personally confident that United Way will find a talented executive that can take the organization into the future,” Stanford said.
