— Organizers of the Routt County Redneck Olympics learned a couple of important things last summer from the first installment of their zany games.

First, the mud pit needs to be extended to balance safety and excitement.

Second, the drivers in the blind tractor course need to be able to better hear, via a headset, the person who is guiding them through the obstacles.

And third, there should be new attractions, like karaoke and a redneck car show.

What cars fit the mold of redneck?

Emcee Rodney McGowen said ones that aren't of a uniform color start to fit the mold.

After that, use your imagination.

“Be ready to laugh,” McGowen said. “And if you want to do some mud surfing, don't wear your Sunday clothes.”

The second installment of the Redneck Olympics will launch at the Routt County Fairgrounds this weekend.

It starts at 8 a.m. Friday with a relay of the “Evel Knievel Flame of Fire” from the top of Hospital Hill to a bonfire tentatively scheduled at the fairgrounds.

On Saturday, the fairgrounds will host the events that include a lawnmower triathlon, a paintball obstacle course and horseshoes.

The Redneck Olympics was started as a grass-roots effort by business owners looking to bring another unique event to the Yampa Valley.

It also will serve as a fundraiser for the Routt County Cattlemen's Association and the Routt County Agriculture, Youth and Heritage Foundation.

McGowen said the inaugural event in Hayden last summer drew some families to Routt County from as far away as Pennsylvania.

He added that unlike last year, nearly all of the events this weekend will be held in front of the grandstands, maximizing crowd enjoyment.

“Last year came off a lot better than we expected,” he said. “This year, our expectations are great.”
