Yampa Valley Data Partners has hired a new economic analyst.

Brandon Owens is joining the nonprofit organization as an independent contractor and adviser on data projects and products, according to a news release.

Scott Ford, who previously worked as an independent contractor for the organization, left Yampa Valley Data Partners earlier this month.

“We are very excited to welcome Brandon to our team. Brandon will bring a fresh perspective to our products and services,” Kate Nowak, executive director of Yampa Valley Data Partners, said in the release.

Owens has a long history of data work in energy-related fields.

According to the release, he has worked for Cambridge Energy Research Associates and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and his work has appeared in the journals Public Utilities Fortnightly, Energy Policy and Research Evaluation.

With degrees from University of Colorado and Colorado School of Mines, Owens has spent 20 years in the public and private sectors and consulting, according to the release.

But Owens describes himself as a generalist.

“I take data and transform it into knowledge and information,” he said.

Owens now works in corporate strategy for General Electric.

That position allows him to work remotely, and after spending time here during the past 10 years, he moved to Steamboat Springs with his family from the Denver area in the summer, he said.

He initially learned about Yampa Valley Data Partners from articles in the Steamboat Today.

“I looked up some of their studies,” Owens said. “I was impressed that these counties have a nonprofit organization that’s focused on data.”

After learning about Ford’s departure, he took the next step.

“I knew that they had a need and reached out to Kate and offered my services,” he said.

Owens said he’s looking forward to getting more familiar with the area through the data, meeting people and applying his skills.
