— The high school Nordic classic race scheduled for Saturday in Leadville has been moved to Steamboat Springs.

The Leadville course at Colorado Mountain College didn’t have enough snow for the classic race.

With few options, the Steamboat Ski Touring Center stepped up and offered to host the race.

“When the opportunity presented itself, we were motivated to see if we could make it happen here,” Steamboat Nordic coach Emily Lovett said. “The Touring Center deserves a huge thanks for stepping up the last minute to host the race.”

The middle school girls race begins at 10:30 a.m. with the boys to follow. The high school girls race should begin at about 11:30 a.m. with the boys to follow.

The middle school course is 3 kilometers, and the high school athletes will ski 5 kilometers.

Because it was a classic race, Lovett said they had to find a place that had enough snow to set tracks.

With limited options, Steamboat was the perfect spot.

“There will be a lot of striding and gradual climbs,” she said. “Kids will have an opportunity to use their technique. They’ll be able to ski a really classic, classic course.”

Volunteers still are needed for the meet. Any person interested should contact Lovett at emilym@springsips.com.
