Thanks to a slow start from the Hayden High School boys basketball team, a Saturday home game against Vail Mountain wasn’t a complete snoozer. Thanks to the Tiger second-quarter wake-up call, it wasn’t that exciting, either.
Hayden led by seven after the first quarter but soon opened up the game the way a heavy favorite is supposed to, eventually winning, 75-40.
“We came out a little sluggish, but once we got going, we played pretty well,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. We physically had them over matched. In the second quarter, we had a lot of breakaways, had some good passing and moved the ball well. Later, we had a lot of young kids who got a lot of good time in the second half.”
Mark Doolin led the team with 15 points and six rebounds. Jorge Valdez and Carlos Valdez each scored 11, Jorge grabbing nine rebounds. Paul Laliberte had 10 points, and Isaac Bridges had nine. Greg Frentress had eight rebounds, and Jordan Ferrier had five.
Hayden is 10-2 and undefeated in league play. It now faces one of its toughest weekends of the regular season. It plays Friday at home against Rangely, then travels Saturday to Meeker.
“We’ve got a target on our back,” Luppes said. “We have to be ready to play every game.”
