The drama had come and gone and the final seconds ticked away without a flurry of fouls and tense free throws.
Make no mistake. This one was a tight game and a crucial win for the Hayden High School boys basketball team, which secured its hold on the league Friday night with a 62-51 win at home against Vail Christian.
The Tigers, now 9-2, held the lead through the game but had to fend off the Saints the entire way until finally gaining a gap for good late in the fourth quarter.
“That was an awfully good one. They were a good ball club,” Hayden coach Mike Luppes said. “They were tough inside, which was a change for us. This was a great league win for us.”
Paul Laliberte led Hayden with 19 points, and he took control of the offense late in the game, dictating the tempo with his drives to the basket. When he didn’t score, he found plenty of Tigers capable of finishing plays. Jorge Valdez had 14, Mark Doolin had 13, and Isaac Bridges had 12.
Hayden returns to the court Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at home against a 1-7 Vail Mountain squad.
