Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School wrestling team came off its busiest week of the year with some of its best performances.
After besting Rangely in a dual Friday, Steamboat finished third out of 15 teams Saturday in a tournament in Rangely.
“They all wrestled pretty good,” coach Shane Yeager said. “With three duals and a tournament, they all got seven or eight matches. Hopefully, we’ve recovered from our Christmas break lag.”
The Sailors had a pair of champions Saturday: Brandon Yeager at 182 pounds and Cole Sittig at heavyweight each won.
Nathan Parks, at 126, and Dane Koepfer, at 145, each finished second. Connor O’Brien was third at 170 pounds.
Now, the team looks forward to a special treat. The team hosts the Ramunno Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday at the high school.
It’s the first time in years the team has hosted a tournament. Ten teams, including Soroco and Hayden, will compete.
“Our whole high school team hasn’t wrestled a high school tournament at home,” Yeager said. “This is the last opportunity for them to wrestle at home.”
