Steamboat Springs It's three weeks into the new year, and Old Town Hot Springs is providing an extra shot of motivation for those holding on to a fitness-related resolution.
For the second straight year, the Hot Springs is offering a fitness challenge throughout the month of February called Fit Miles. Members compete for various prizes, including extended memberships. The challenge is free for members, and people can sign up at the front desk.
Hot Springs Fitness Director Simonne Oliver said the challenge is a good way for people to give themselves confidence and to reach their fitness goals. She stressed that it's important for folks to focus on their fitness efforts one month at a time.
“What I usually say is don’t over-set your goals,” Oliver said Tuesday.
Participants in the Fit Miles challenge accumulate points over the month by doing everything from water walking to a Bosu cardio class.
“We have attached miles to any activity in this facility,” Oliver said. “You can even get five miles for just soaking.”
Those competing for the grand prizes of one-year, six-month and one-month memberships have to complete three additional challenges. Participants have to climb at least halfway up the climbing wall, lead an exercise class for 30 minutes and find a friend to join the Hot Springs for at least a month.
Other prizes for those who earn at least 300 miles over the month include two hours of personal training, an hour-massage, and punch cards for Yoga and spin classes.
“We have lots of prizes that people can go for,” Oliver said. “I think we’ll get a good turnout this year.”
Last year, 135 people signed up for the challenge, which ended in a six-way tie.
“If you’re coming in here to work out you might as well sign a (Fit Miles) participation agreement so you get points,” Oliver said.
Exercise is only part of the equation when it comes to fitness and weight loss. Jamie Alperin, a registered dietician who runs Dietary Designs in Steamboat, said there are two major things people should keep in mind.
First, she recommends people eat smaller meals every three hours to provide a constant source of energy. Second, every meal should include a carbohydrate and a protein to keep blood-sugar levels balanced.
A few easy meals Alperin recommends are yogurt, fruit and nuts, fruit and peanut butter, and vegetables and hummus.
“If you eat healthy you give yourself more energy, and that in itself gives you more motivation,” said Alperin, adding that motivation also can come from working toward goals with a dietician or personal trainer.
People also might want to remind themselves of their goals. Alperin said she has all her clients create S.M.A.R.T. goals. The acronym stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time specific.
Alperin advised residents to write their goals onto note cards and then determine what changes they will make in their lives to allow them to achieve those goals.
