Jon Freckelton won a pursuit race Sunday at Steamboat Springs Touring Center, beating the field in a new style of Nordic ski race the touring center was trying out for the first time.
The event challenged cross-country skiers with both classic and skate skiing sections. It started with a 5-kilometer interval-start classic race. The skiers were then seeded for a pursuit skate skiing race, with each racer’s start for the skate skiing portion determined by their finish in the classic race.
Freckelton won the classic portion and had the second-fastest time in the 10K skate race, finishing with the overall victory.
Antonio Marxauch had the best skate skiing time and was second in the classic race. He finished second overall. TJ Thrasher was third, ahead of Scott Myller in fourth and Frank Smith in fifth.
Jimmy Colfer won a shorter children’s race that featured a 1.5K classic ski and a 3K skate ski. He was ahead of Julia Congdon, in second, and Cole Sias, who was third. Lauren Requist was fourth, Gabby Kenny was fifth and Rachelle Koly was sixth.
