Mike Vandahl, basketball
2008 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, senior at Western State Colorado University
Vandahl had one of his best games of the season Saturday, scoring 15 points in a 67-49 loss to Colorado Mesa. Vandahl made three 3-pointers and three more shots while also grabbing two rebounds. Western State dropped to 7-8 on the season and 6-5 in league play.
Isaiah Mendoza-Forsyth, basketball
2011 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, freshman at Johnson & Wales University
Mendoza-Forsyth played in both of Johnson & Wales' games last week and scored two points and had one rebound in a 91-84 loss against Oglala Lakota College. The team also lost to South Dakota School of Mines, 82-66.
Mary Rose, cross-country skiing
2008 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, senior at University of Colorado
Rose placed fifth in a 5-kilometer freestyle Nordic skiing race Saturday in Minturn. It was her third top-10 finish of the season. She was one of four Buffs to break into the top 10 at the event. A day later, she placed ninth in a 10K classic skiing race at the same event, helping lift CU to first place in the Denver Invitational.
Charlie Von Thaden, cross-country skiing
2012 graduate of The Lowell Whiteman School, freshman at University of Colorado
Von Thaden placed 22nd in a 10K freestyle Nordic skiing event in Minturn. He also was 22nd a day later in a 15K classic race at the same event.
Lauryn Bruggink, wrestling
2012 graduate of Soroco High School, freshman at Wayland Baptist University
Bruggink went undefeated through a weekend of wrestling Jan. 12 and 13 in Springfield, Ill. Wrestling at 116 pounds, she logged a win against Victoria Nguyen, of King College in Tennessee. She also got a forfeit victory against Lindenwood, Mo. Her best win was against Sherri Berube, of University of the Cumberlands, where Bruggink earned a pin.
“She fought like crazy for 30 seconds, and then came back and got the pin. That was a really good win,” coach Johnny Cobb said.
2012 graduate of The Lowell Whiteman School, freshman at Saint Michael’s College
Franklin competed in events Jan. 13 against Le Moyne and Sunday at St. Lawrence, placing three times in each. She was second in a 200-yard medley relay and fourth in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke Jan. 13. She then placed first in a 200 freestyle relay and was third in the 200 medley relay and 100 backstroke Jan. 20.
Alex Estes, track and field
2010 graduate of Soroco High School, junior at Adams State University
Estes competed at the Cheery and Silver Invitational indoor track meet put on by the University of New Mexico on Friday and Saturday. He placed 14th in the long jump, leaping 21 feet, 5.25 inches, and he was 16th in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2.25 inches.
