Steamboat Springs Hayden and Paonia girls basketball matchups have made for classic games in recent years. The Tigers are in full-fledged rebuilding mode, however, and Paonia still is one of the state’s very best. The matchup Saturday wasn’t what it's been as the Eagles ran away with a 59-18 victory.
Despite the final margin, Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie found plenty to take away from the game, especially her team’s performance in the first half. Paonia led just 13-6 after one quarter and 28-13 after two.
“I was very pleased. Our first half was wonderful,” she said. “We played great defense, and we broke their press beautifully. We really executed our press breaker and did a great job.”
The Tigers weren’t as sharp in the second half. They didn’t score in the third quarter, and Paonia blew the game open.
Savannah Williams scored six points to lead the Tigers, now 1-9 on the season. Kara Cozzens and Olivia Zehner each had four.
