Nate Johansing lifts in front of a section of a CrossFit class at Fusion Fit in Steamboat Springs on Monday. The gym moved into a new location in Riverside Plaza earlier this month.
Steamboat Springs The weather outside was so frigid Monday that frost formed on the wrong side of doors in Steamboat Springs.
Inside of Fusion Fits’ new digs, however, it was simply sultry.
The Steamboat gym began focusing on CrossFit workouts about three and a half years ago, working out of a storefront on the east end of town. That program helped the company outgrow those confines, however, and it officially reopened in a much larger space in Riverside Plaza on Jan. 1.
“It’s awesome. It’s just an incredible amount of space,” said Mike McCannon, who took over running the business about two years ago. “We’re set up like a real CrossFit gym now. We have ample equipment and plenty of room for people to do their workouts.”
The move more than triples the available space for the gym, and it’s a much better fit for the high-intensity workouts demanded by CrossFit.
The new space is a bit over 3,000 square feet, and it can all be dedicated to CrossFit. The old space had two levels with about 800 square feet each, but only the ground floor was suitable for CrossFit and the weights it requires.
“There we had a few pull-up bars, space for about six people to be doing pull-ups at a time,” McCannon said. “Now we’re almost limitless. We can have 15 or 20 people in a class. We have more weights and we’re doing more work with barbells. More room gives us more opportunity.”
Monday, a class of more than a dozen hit it hard for an hour, both men and women lifting weights in timed sessions while the music blared.
“We simply outgrew the other place and this place called to us,” said Sarah Coleman, a personal trainer and coach at the gym. “It’s cool. In a smaller place, you can fall behind. Can you do some of the things you need to do? Here we can do everything.”
The gym, at 2851 Riverside Plaza, isn’t limited to CrossFit. It also offers personal training sessions, spinning classes and other classes.
The gym costs $120 per month for unlimited classes.
