Mayling Simpson: Ski with a buddy

I was saddened to read in Thursday’s Steamboat Today about the death of Cooper Larsh on March 17, 2011, at the Howelsen Hill Ski Area due to suffocation and the current lawsuit against the city of Steamboat Springs for his wrongful death.

This death was so preventable. All Larsh needed was a ski buddy. Larsh died because nobody saw him fall. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, in its ski safety tips, put skiing with a buddy as the first safety tip. “Skiers should ski with partners, who remain in sight.” How often have I seen a sign at any ski area advising me to ski with a partner who remains in sight? Never. The city of Steamboat Springs would do well to require ski helmets and ski partners on Howelsen Hill.
