Any other season, maybe it would be a disappointment. The Hayden High School girls team played poorly in the fourth quarter and lost Friday night at West Grand, 46-31.
Despite the upsetting end to the game, Hayden coach Michelle Wilkie had no problem finding positives. The game was tied at half and the Tigers trailed by just two going into the fourth quarter.
“We played three quarters of very good basketball,” she said. “We set five goals and we accomplished all but one of them. I’m very pleased with that.”
Hayden (1-8) lost by an average of nearly 30 points in its seven losses prior to Friday night’s game, so going punch for punch with a league rival was a major indicator of progress to Wilkie. She said the team’s goals included improving its free throw percentage, cutting turnovers by half, hitting double digits in both offensive and defensive rebounds and simply shooting more shots — 60 in a game.
The only goal they missed was scoring 40 points.
Kayla Dunkley led the team with nine points. Kara Cozzens and Savannah Williams each had seven. Olivia Zehner and Emma Johnson each scored four. The Tigers play at noon Saturday vs. Vail Mountain.
