— Jon Herod, 49, was killed Thursday morning in an explosion at an oil rig about seven miles north of Craig. There were no other injuries.

Moffat County Sheriff’s Office investigator Jeremy Ashton said deputies responded to a call about an industrial accident at 10:34 a.m. Thursday at Bull Dog 531 rig, which is maintained by Axia Energy on Moffat County Road 103.

Ashton said the explosion was in a production water tank that contained the water left over from the fracking process.

"We believe the valves were frozen, and he was trying to thaw them out with a propane heater when it exploded," Ashton said.

Although a cause has not been determined, Ashton said investigators think residual oil in the tank caused the explosion. He said that when water from the fracking site is pumped into the tanks, the tanks are supposed to isolate the oil in the water.

Craig Fire/Rescue Chief Bill Johnston said the fire department extinguished the fire, and the incident remains under investigation.
