Steamboat briefs: Lake Catamount Touring Center offers women's cross-country series

The Lake Catamount Touring Center is offering a six-week series of cross-country ski classes for women. The classes, held Fridays beginning Jan. 11 and continuing through Feb. 15, are 1 1/2 hours and will focus on technique improvement and fitness. All levels are welcome.

The skate skiing class will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. while the classic skiing class will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. The six-week series costs $175 or $40 per drop-in class. Half-price rentals are available. To sign up for the clinics, call the touring center at 970-871-6667.   

Routt County Weed Program is sponsoring weekly class

The Routt County Weed Program is sponsoring a weekly class about “Weed Management and Land Conservation Practices.” The class is from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 30 and continuing through March 6. Space is limited, and the tuition fee is $35.

Topics to be covered during the course include general botany, plant ecology, weed and poisonous plant identification, weed management strategies, herbicide use, biological control options, equipment choices and sprayer calibration. The course aims to help landowners make wise land-use decisions.

Horizons Specialized Services provides free screenings for children. If you’re a parent and are concerned about your child’s development, call Kathy Northcutt at 970-871-8558. The screenings can answer questions such as “Should he be walking by now?” “How many words should she be saying?” and “Is her hearing and vision what it should be?”
