Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team pulled the biggest upset of the first round of the Class 4A tournament Tuesday when it beat No. 6 Green Mountain, 32-30.
The No. 11 Sailors would no doubt earn that distinction again if they find a way around Windsor in a 7 p.m. game Friday at Mesa Ridge High School.
The Wizards have lost big when they’ve lost, falling by an average of 30 points. But they’ve only lost three times and haven’t lost at all in 2013. Now at 20-3, they’re riding a 14-game winning streak into the tournament, where they received a first-round bye.
“They’re a good team with a good record,” Steamboat coach John Ameen said.
The team is ranked No. 8 in the state and led by sophomore center Brooke Pemberton’s 15.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
Steamboat and Windsor faced off a year ago in the Steamboat Springs Shoot-Out. The Wizards dominated that game, winning 59-29.
“They worked us a bit in that game, but things they did to do, we are a much better team in those areas,” Ameen said. “We’re better at getting back in transition and getting back from our press to set up a defense.
“We expect the same kind of style from them, but we have a lot more confidence in handling all of that.”To reach Joel Reichenberger, call 970-871-4253 or email jreichenberger@SteamboatToday.com
