Steamboat briefs: Contest held for 1st crane sighting of the season

The Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition is sponsoring a contest for the first crane sighting of the season. The cranes winter in New Mexico and Arizona before heading back to the Yampa Valley during the first half of March, according to the news release.

To participate in the contest, document any sightings of cranes in the Yampa Valley and send the photo with date, time and location of sighting to coloradocranes@gmail.com or Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition, 40625 Routt County Road 69A, Hayden, CO 81639.

At the end of March, the winner’s name and photo will be posted at www.coloradocranes.org.

Kathleen Brady Ross is named to CU dean’s list

Kathleen Brady Ross, a 2012 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, was named to the dean’s list at the University of Colorado Boulder for fall semester. Ross is pursuing majors in film studies and English through the College of Arts and Sciences. She also is producing a CD with original songs and music that is scheduled for release in the spring.

Proposals for Yampa Street benches are due Thursday

Mainstreet Steamboat Springs — in conjunction with the Downtown Revitalization Partnership and the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association’s 2012-13 Leadership Steamboat class — is seeking artists to design, fabricate and deliver five artistic benches for Yampa Street, according to a news release. 

The project is part of an effort to revitalize and enhance downtown Steamboat Springs, and its goal is to create aesthetically pleasing, creative and functional seating that reflects Steamboat’s local heritage. The project includes an allowance of $15,000 for the fabrication and installation of the benches and is funded by private donations and matching funds from the Yampa Valley Community Foundation, according to the release.

Early registration for Glide the Divide ends Thursday

Registration is open for the Glide the Divide (formerly the North Routt Coureur Des Bois) cross-country ski race March 16 at the Steamboat Lake State Park visitor center. The annual event features 15-, 45- and 90-kilometer courses.

Early registration is open through Thursday and costs $30 for the 15K course and $85 for the 45K and 95K courses. Fees increase to $40 and $98, respectively, after Thursday.
