Steamboat Springs The Steamboat Springs High School boys and girls basketball teams found out their state fates Sunday as the brackets for the Class 4A state basketball tournaments were revealed.
Each team was slotted as a No. 11 seed in its 12-team region and both will play on the road Wednesday in the tournament's first round.
For the Sailors girls, that means a trip to Lakewood to play Green Mountain, a 14-9 squad from the JeffCo League and the No. 6 seed in the region.
“I’ve been talking to some coaches. A lot of them think that league was down,” he said. “What works in our favor, every coach I’ve talked to says they’re able to be pressed, that they have a hard time with that. It seems like a very winnable game for us. We have to come out and play our game and adjust to their personnel.”
Wednesday’s winner won’t have long to reflect on things. The next game awaits Friday against No. 3 seed Windsor, 20-3.
The boys, meanwhile, open Wednesday against Golden, 15-8.
“Our guys are pretty excited and looking forward to the opportunity,” coach Luke DeWolfe said. “We don’t have anything to lose and have everything to gain.”
Golden has been playing its best ball the second half of the season, winning 10 of its last 13 games. The winner advances to play 17-6 Denver South on Friday.
“It will be a great experience for our guys,” DeWolfe said. “I’m confident we’ll play well. We’ve been playing well this last stretch and we’ll see where it falls.”
