It was a virtual offensive explosion for the Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team, and on Friday, the Sailors rode it to a win against rival Glenwood Springs, 53-47, in a strange game at the district tournament in Grand Junction.
First, Steamboat led 26-8 at halftime.
“We played great defense in the first half,” coach Luke DeWolfe said. “Then we shot the ball really well. We took them out of their game plan. They went into a zone in the second quarter, and we shot them right out of it.”
The quirks continued in the second half. Steamboat made 23 or 29 free throws in the second half. In a game that got physical, the Sailors scored all 17 of their fourth-quarter points from the free-throw line.
Carter Kounovsky scored 18 to lead the Sailors. Garrett Bye had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
“It was a great win,” DeWolfe said.
Glenwood beat Steamboat in two earlier meetings this year.
“Our kids, really, in that first half were playing tremendous defense. It shows how much they enjoy playing defense, how much they buy into it,” he said. “When we can add scoring to defensive play, we become a pretty good team. Hopefully, we can carry that on.”
Steamboat plays again Saturday against Montrose.
