Steamboat Springs It began snowing in earnest at 6:45 a.m. Friday in Steamboat Springs, but the latest fresher upper for Steamboat Ski Area was expected to give way to intermittent showers by afternoon, and sunny skies with high temperatures above freezing were expected to dominate the weekend.
“Although the valley will likely remain cold as inversion develops, warmer and sunny weather should invade the slopes for a beautiful weekend,” Steamboat-based meteorologist Mike Weissbluth wrote in an email early Friday.
Steamboat Ski Area was reporting 5 inches of snow in the preceding 24 hours and 9 inches in 48 hours in its 5 a.m. Friday snow report.
Weissbluth, who maintains www.snowalarm.com, expected 3 to 6 inches of fresh snow to accumulate at the ski area by Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service in Grand Junction was expecting mostly sunny weather to continue through Tuesday with high temperatures of 29 degrees Monday and 32 degrees Tuesday.
Joel Gratz, who focuses on the Colorado Rockies at www.opensnow.com, is bullish on the outlook for snow through the end of the month.
“Our western forecasters are getting excited at the prospect of a very snowy final two weeks of February,” Gratz wrote in an email Thursday afternoon.
