Steamboat Springs Time and again, the volatility of the Western Slope League has been brought up.
Case in point, the Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team’s 52-40 win at Palisade on Friday.
The Bulldogs entered the contest at the top of the league, but on Friday, the Sailors used a big third quarter and finally played well on offense to make the league that much more interesting.
“It’s a big win,” Sailors coach Luke DeWolfe said.
The two teams were back and forth in a alley cat fight in the first half. Tied at 16 after two quarters, Steamboat dominated the third.
The Sailors outscored the Bulldogs, 21-7, in the third quarter to blow things open.
“It’s one of those games we’ve been waiting for on the offensive end,” DeWolfe said. “When you combine our defensive effort with great offense, we’ll be pretty hard to beat.”
Carter Kounovsky had one of his better games, scoring 20 points.
Zack Dunklin chipped in nine, and Garrett Bye had eight.
Steamboat (9-7 overall, 5-6 in league) next plays at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Delta.
