Steamboat briefs: Steamboat Springs’ 100th Winter Carnival starts Wednesday

■ Winter Carnival begins Wednesday with the opening of the Ski Town USA exhibit at the Tread of Pioneers Museum, 800 Oak St. The new ski exhibit will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during Winter Carnival. Admission is free.
■ Winter Carnival volunteers are needed, including people to sell Winter Carnival buttons at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Visit www.sswsc.org and click on the Volunteer Spot icon to sign up.
■ All registrations for this year’s Winter Carnival street events for children will be handled at www.steamboatchamber.com/streeteventregistration. For more information, call 970-875-7005. The 100th Winter Carnival is Wednesday through Sunday, with the street events taking place Saturday and Sunday. ■ The Soda Pop Slalom is at 10 a.m. Friday on Stampede Run at Steamboat Ski Area. The race is open to any skier or snowboarder who is in fifth grade or a U10 participant or younger. Preregistration is required by 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, which is open from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Participants must have a Winter Carnival button, which can be purchased for $10 at registration. For more information, call the Winter Sports Club at 970-879-0695, ext. 100.
Out-of-town symphony members need lodging
The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra is seeking lodging for its out-of-town musicians performing in the Sunday Steamboat Celebration Concert. The group will pay for professional cleaning after the musicians leave as well as provide complimentary tickets to the concert or a charitable receipt for tax purposes. Musicians arrive Thursday and depart Monday. Those who are interested can call 970-870-3223.
City department extends registration for league
The city of Steamboat Springs Parks, Open Space and Recreational Services department has extended to Thursday the registration deadline for the youth basketball league. Boys and girls in third through sixth grades are welcome to play. Registration is $80. Register at www.steamboatsprings.net/rec or at the Parks and Recreation office, 245 Howelsen Parkway.
Coaches also are needed for the league, so those who are interested are asked to contact Susan Petersen at spetersen@steamboatsprings.net or 970-879-4300, ext. 331.
